June is Outdoors Month

Concessioners, hoteliers, tour operators, state and local CVBs recognize that recreation and relaxation are the driving forces behind vacation travels.

Recreation.gov, part of the Recreation One-Stop E-Gov initiative, provides an on-going single point of access to information about Federal recreational activities and reservations. And, just in time for summer planning Recreation.gov is celebrating June as Great Outdoor Month. Key outdoor recreation leaders have ask the President, state governors, and other key supporters to proclaim June as Great Outdoors Month

The proclamations bring nationwide attention to the economic importance of recreation and the special role Great Outdoors plays in confirming the United States as a major recreational destination for international visitors.

is your “one-stop shop” for recreation information in and on our nation’s federal public lands. The site, initially developed as a portal to reserve campgrounds, has been growing to include a library of trip planning content for you to share with your guests and potential visitors. Whether it’s hiking, water skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, backpacking or just relaxing in camp by a stream, Recreation.gov has hundreds of options and loads of advice to connect people with their passions. The objective is to support their vacation experiences on all levels-from planning their visits, to experiencing the nation’s parks, forests, wildlife refuges and waterways in an authentic way and to sharing those memories with their friends and the world.

To that end, Recreation.gov just launched their 2014 “Share the Experience” federal lands photo contest. The 2013 winner was announced onnational televisionthis spring, spurring over 6,000 entries.

National Parks on the Giant Screen

Brand USA, the nation’s destination marketing organization, has begun work on an exciting project to bring the wonder and beauty of the United States’ greatest treasures to giant screens around the world. In commemoration of the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service, Brand USA is partnering with MacGillivray Freeman Films to produce a film for giant screen theaters worldwide that celebrates the USA as a top travel destination through the lens of our national parks and public lands and waters. With a planned release in mid-2015, buzz is building in national park and outdoor recreation circles about the project.

It’s All About Stewardship: Delaware North’s Kalaloch Lodge Reduces Environmental Impact, Surpasses Goals

Since being awarded the concessionaire contract at Kalaloch Lodge in Washington’s Olympic National Park in 2012, Delaware North Companies Parks and Resorts (DNC) has made a significant impact in reducing both water usage and waste generation. In fact, they’ve surpassed the goals they set for themselves and continue to be an industry leader in stewardship pursuits.
Initially, the goal was to reduce water usage by 40 percent by 2020.  So aggressive and immediate were their efforts that they reached this goal in 2013 and revised the 2020 target to 50 percent! Installing low-flow shower heads in rooms and in the Lodge’s kitchen dishwasher and sprayer instantly helped.  Awareness and training initiatives for the public and employees included launching a linen-reuse program, placing timers in all showers, and reinforcing water conservation principles via training and signage. Additionally, Kalaloch Lodge joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense H2Otel Challenge in early 2014. The Challenge encourages lodging businesses to “ACT” by assessing their water use, changing water-wasting products or processes, and tracking the results (www.epa.gov/watersense).
Waste reduction efforts have also been commendable. This goal was also aggressive: Zero Waste by 2020, with an incremental goal of 40 percent diversion by 2014.  Within ONE year Delaware North took the solid waste diversion rate from 5 percent to nearly 50 percent-diverting nearly 31 tons of waste from landfill.  How? Well, Kalaloch Lodge had to develop their own systems and processes-because of their remote location on the Olympic Peninsula. Here’s just a few of the creative tactics employed to achieve their quick results: Read More

Dear National Parks Partners,

As President Franklin D. Roosevelt so eloquently surmised, “There is nothing so American as our national parks…The fundamental idea behind the parks…is that the country belongs to the people, that it is a process of making for the enrichment of the lives of all of us.”  Read More
